Sheriff’s department busy over holiday weekend

KEWEENAW COUNTY — The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to three emergency calls in as many days over the 4th of July weekend.

Deputies on Thursday responded to a call of a man with a knife chasing a woman in Ahmeek, at approximately 2:53 p.m.

The man was located at the Dollar General store in New Allouez and was arrested.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Calumet post assisted deputies. No other details are available at this time.

On Friday, at approximately 6:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Copper Harbor in response to a stranded canoe paddler stranded on Porter’s Island.

Deputies were able to use a boat provided by Fort Wilkins State Park to rescue a 56-year-old man and his dog, bringing them safely to shore.

On Sunday, deputies were again called out, this time to Phoenix, at approximately 6 p.m. in response to a lost fisherman in the Phoenix Farms area.

After a brief search, the deputies located the 79-year-old man and assisted him back to his vehicle.

Neither Sheriff Curt Pennala nor Undersheriff Tonya Stefonich could be reached for additional details before press time.
