District 109’s forecast calls for Bohnak

The Michigan House’s 109th District will fall into Republican control for the first time since 1984 with locally renowned former TV meteorologist Karl Bohnak claiming the position. Bohnak had performed a political upset in the District expected to return to incumbent Jenn Hill’s control but managed to pass her 24,847 votes with his 26,189 votes which accounted for 51.3% of total voters within the district. These numbers have been tabulated as of late morning of Nov. 6.

Bohnak had run with one of his primary reasons being an objection to Hill’s support of energy legislation of which he believes have cost and will cost Michiganders’ a significant cut into their income through taxes. He also believes that the Upper Peninsula’s central district has not been properly represented for some time.

Now with the election won, Bohnak has the opportunity to bring forth the perspective he believes better represents Yoopers with an emphasis on preserving the unique culture of the U.P.

“For everyone I’m here to listen, I’m here to learn and I’m here to serve and to put the Upper Peninsula first,” Bohnak told TV 6 at his watch party. “That was my objective in the first place.”

Hill released a statement on Nov. 6 saying that the results were not what she and her supporters were hoping for, but that serving as the district’s representative has been an honor and that she will continue to advocate for the community and the values it shares.
