40 years of holiday cheer

CALUMET – For the past 40 years, Copper World in Calumet has been a destination store where locals and visitors have been able to find that perfect gift. Since June 1, 1974, founders Tony and Joyce Bausano, and now their children Tim and Christine, have spent most every day in the store, getting to know their product and their customers.

If you know anything about the Bausano Family, you know that they love working with the people that come through the front door every day. As a child, Tony worked alongside his mom and dad, who operated the Great Northern Mineral Supply in Calumet and the Great Northern Motel, which was located across from Jacob’s Falls, just north of Eagle River. In 1974, Tony’s father, John Bausano, retired and handed ownership over to his son. That year, the business was renamed Copper World, and in 1977, Copper World moved to its current location on the corner of Fifth and Scott Street. In 1989, a clothing section was added and in 2002, the building was completely renovated and restored to the way it looks today.

As you walk into Copper World, your senses will be awakened. The warm greeting of an old-fashioned store, the smell of candles and handmade soaps, the glitter of jewelry, the shine of the copper, and the sheer variety of product will keep you coming back again and again.

For some, finding the perfect holiday gift can be difficult, but most who shop at Copper World find more great items than they need. From local copper to Lake Superior rock products to bird’s eye maple, Copper World has many great gifts for the home. They also have the area’s largest selection of local books to keep you busy reading during these long winter days. Copper World is also proud to feature locally made food items such as Thimbleberry Jam, maple syrup, honey, and Sayklly’s Candies. With over 125 artists and companies under one roof, you are sure to find that perfect gift.

Copper World also carries many great gifts to remind your loved ones of the Upper Peninsula. From t-shirts, caps, and sweatshirts in its apparel section to ornaments, stickers, and Yooper Bars, they have something for everyone.

As the Bausanos look back over the past 40 years of business, they are thankful to the many wonderful customers who have made their store a staple in the Copper Country. Many of their customers come back year after year, and in some cases, week after week. They have enjoyed getting to know so many from the community and those who travel to the Keweenaw. They have been blessed to be chosen nearly every year as the best gift and souvenir store in the area by the readers of the Daily Mining Gazette and chosen as the best gift store in Michigan for the past 3 years by the readers of Lake Superior Magazine.

From Tony, Joyce, Tim, and Chris, thanks Copper Country for 40 great years! They look forward to serving you for many more!

Happy Holidays!
