Peiffer’s Corner

HANCOCK – When he’s not in Washington, D.C. playing Assistant Principal Horn as part of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, John Peiffer can be found in the Copper Country where he makes his home for part of the year.

This Saturday he’ll be playing with local musician Steve Jones at The Orpheum Theater.

Peiffer said his show will consist of some of his original music, a lot of standards like Cole Porter and stuff from that era and a bit of blues.

“That pretty much sums up what my show is,” he said.

He’ll also be doing a lot of singing.

“I’ll be singing on just about every tune,” Peiffer said.

When it comes to picking his favorite kind of music he was hard-pressed to find a definitive answer.

“For me, it’s usually whatever I’m doing at the moment,” he said. “I really like a lot of different kinds. The only thing I haven’t done too much of is rap. …But who knows what the future might bring.”

A few years ago, musician Bob Hiltunen introduced Peiffer to Steve Jones.

“We just hit it off marvelously and we’ve been playing together ever since,” Peiffer said.

Joining Peiffer and Jones at the concert, will be Dan Fuhrman on keys, Tim Havens on bass and Adam Johnson on drums. This will be Peiffer’s third time playing at The Orpheum.

“It’s a wonderful place. I love the hall, I love the local folks, we always seem to get a pretty good crowd and it’s always a lot of fun,” Peiffer said.

Peiffer’s love of music began when he was a child. He grew up singing in his dad’s church coir. His father was an organist.

“When I took up the french horn he had me playing in church whenever I could and after I got out of high school I did a little bit of playing with my older brother … and then I decided I needed to go to college and I went to the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore,” Peiffer said.

Steve Jones (known from Steve Jones and the Garden City Hot Club) said he and Peiffer play around 20 to 25 gigs a year together.

Jones said people shouldn’t expect a Garden City Hot Club show.

“This is all John’s arrangements of his selection of jazz standards,” Jones said. “I’m just there to add what I do. He’ll throw me solos and I’m just playing rhythm guitar. Everybody in that band is very accomplished on their instrument. John brought us together to fulfil his vision for his arrangements.”

Peiffer, Jones and the rest of the group will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at The Orpheum Theater in Hancock. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
