Portage offers 2 life saving classes

HANCOCK — UP Health System-Portage hospital conducts two life saving classes aimed at different audiences, but Jenna Ollanketo said anyone can take either class.

Ollanketo, who is CPR coordinator for the hospital, said the Heartsaver First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator class can be taken by anyone who wants to know how to give assistance in an emergency situation.

“Heartsaver is generally designed for a public audience,” she said.

People who work in industry or with groups of people, such as daycare employees, often take the Heartsaver class, Ollanketo said.

A more intense training class offered by the hospital is called Basic Life Support. Ollanketo said. First responders, nurses, dentists, and respiratory therapists often take the class.

“It’s great for people who work in (a medical) setting,” she said. “BLS is more in-depth for health care providers.”

However, that class, also, is open to anyone who wants to take it, Ollanketo said.

With the BSL class, students learn adult and pediatric CPR, including a two-person bag mask scenario, foreign-body airway obstruction and use of an AED.

Ollanketo said the Heartsaver course is four hours, including a general first aid instruction. The cost for both classes is $55 for the general public and $45 for students. There is limited space for the classes.

“We do cap out at about 15 students,” she said.

Group and business rates are available.

With the successful completion of the classes, Ollanketo said participants will get a two-year certificate.

Ollanketo said both classes take place in the conference room of the hospital’s location on Campus Drive in Hancock. The next Heartsaver class is at 5:30 p.m. April 4. The next BLS class is at 5:30 p.m. April 18. To register, go to portagehealth.org and click on the classes and events tab.

Ollanketo said the classes can be brought to a business to instruct employees.
