Express Care offers convenience and flexibility

Becoming sick or experiencing an injury that requires medical attention but doesn’t warrant a trip to the emergency department is truly inconvenient. Add in the stress of waiting at a doctor’s office hoping they can fit you in, you can often feel overwhelmed and helpless.

UP Health System-Portage Express Care offers a solution for the residents of the Keweenaw, students of our universities, and visitors of the Copper Country.

Express Care, located off Sharon Ave. in Houghton, begins accepting patients at 9 a.m., seven days a week. Patients continue to be accepted until 15 minutes before closing, which is typically 7 p.m.. Express Care is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

No appointment is necessary because all patients are treated on a first-come first-served basis. If you need medical attention at 10 a.m., you shouldn’t wait until the next opening at 2:30 p.m. before being seen. Express Care offers convenience and flexibility when returning to better health.

Common conditions treated at express care include back pain, coughing, earaches, ear cleaning, fevers, influenza testing, minor burns, minor wound care, pregnancy tests, seasonal allergies, sore or strep throat, rashes, bladder infections, pink eye, headaches, toothaches, bug bites and even removal of fish hooks. High school and middle school sports screenings and exams are available. Tetanus and flu immunizations are available as well.

Patients will find themselves being treated by medical providers looking out for their best interest. These medical providers come from backgrounds in family medicine, emergency care, orthopedics, and more.

Services are offered at a flat fee of $55. Additional charges may apply for sports screenings, medications and procedures such as injections, lacerations, wound care, etc.

If you find yourself visiting a specialist at Express Care, ask if a follow-up visit to your primary care physician is recommended. Visit summaries from Express Care can be sent to your primary can physician. Express Care was designed for immediate appointment availabilities for minor ailments, but should never take place of a primary care provider.

While you’re experiencing all the beauty the Keweenaw Peninsula offers, Express Care offers convenience and flexibility to help you return to better health as quickly as possible.
