Contested races in Houghton Co. primary

HOUGHTON – Filings are in for August primary races in Houghton County races.

For county positions, the primary will see two contested races for county positions. In clerk, incumbent Jennifer Kelly Lorenz will face off against challenger Mary Beth Hodges in the Democratic primary. There will also be a contested primary in Houghton County District 1, where Commissioner Eugene Londo will run against former Commissioner Tom Tikkanen, who Londo defeated in the 2014 Republican primary. The winner of that race will face Democrat Rick Kasprzak, who Londo defeated in 2014.

Contested general election races include prosecutor, where incumbent Michael Makinen will run against former Prosecutor Douglas Edwards, who has no party affiliation, and Republican James Cone. Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean is running against Democrat Derek Poyhonen.

On the county board, two others will have contested November races. In District 2, board Chair Albert Koskela is running as a Republican against Democrat Valorie Troesch. District 5 Commissioner Tim Palosaari, a Republican, is running against Democrat George Rajala.

Houghton County Treasurer Kathleen Beattie, District 3 Commissioner Anton Pintar, District 4 Commissioner Scott Ala, Drain Commissioner John Pekkala and Mine Inspector Murray Gillis are running unopposed.

Running in city and township races:

Adams Township: Gerald Heikkinen for supervisor; Nancy Immonen for treasurer; Diane Keranen and David Mattila for trustee, Debra Pindral for clerk and Janet K. Gregorich as Precinct 1 delegate.

Calumet Township: Debra Aubin for treasurer; Tim Gasperich, Jeff West, David Yeo and Robert Zander for trustee; Paul Lehto for supervisor, Beth Salmela for clerk and Jeffrey Jacobs and Cathy Jacobs for Precinct 1 delegate.

Chassell Township: Lynn Gierke for clerk; Christopher Holmes for supervisor; Kelly Holmes for treasurer; Kevin Kallianen for constable; Ryan Kuntze and Daniel Palosaari for trustee.

Duncan Township: Kathleen Allen for clerk, Sandra Margaritis for treasurer, Barbara Passmore and Joy Sanford for trustee.

Elm River Township: Cheryl Reynolds for treasurer, John Reynolds for supervisor, Sherri Brandt for clerk, Richard Trudgeon, Josh Loukus and Kevin Codere for trustee.

Franklin Township: Mary Sears for supervisor and Precinct 2 delegate, Timothy Sears for Precinct 2 delegate.

City of Hancock: Ann Pace for Precinct 3 delegate, John Slivon for Precinct 3 delegate.

City of Houghton: Joan Antila, Carolyn Peterson and John Sullivan for Precinct 1 delegate.

Hancock Township: Julianne Haischer, Ken Moyle and Ronald Racine Sr. for trustee, Richard Hauswirth for clerk, Paul Kemppainen for supervisor, Richard Richards for treasurer.

Laird Township: Duane Fedie for supervisor; Edward Hulkonen, Jr. and Patricia Spencer for trustee, Francis Tossava for constable, Elaine Vassel for clerk.

Osceola Township: Christa Gardner for treasurer; Rick Greub for supervisor; Steven Karpiak for supervisor and Precinct 2 delegate; Aaron Janke and Donald Wareham for trustee, Judy Odgers for clerk.

Portage Township: Peggy Lee Anderson, Bill Bingham, Andrew Kemper and John Ollila for trustee, Roy Britz and Robert Laux for constable, Carol Little and Bruce Petersen for supervisor, Heidi Paoli Riutta for clerk.

Quincy Township: Chris Kangas and Dennis Raasio for trustee, Dolores Kangas for clerk, Glenn North for supervisor, Cheri Raasio for treasurer.

Schoolcraft Township: Joel Keranen for supervisor; Susan Marcotte for trustee; Dennis Racine for treasurer, Gary Wenberg for clerk.

Stanton Township: Lori Anderson for treasurer, Kara Heinonen for clerk, Janet Larson for trustee.

Torch Lake Township: Lou Ambuehl and Scott Sapino for trustee, Brian Cadwell for supervisor, Mary Isola for clerk, Diane Zurcher for treasurer.
