Sheriff warns of Dish phone scam

HOUGHTON COUNTY – Houghton County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of a new telephone scam targeting Dish Network customers.

“The scammers are calling residents using the name ‘Info-Tech’ and stating that they are contracting with Dish Network,” according to a press release the sheriff’s office issued Thursday. “The scam involves asking for account information and payment information to adjust satellites feeding the signal.”

The sheriff’s office has confirmed through Dish Network that Info-Tech is not a contractor for the company, and cautions residents to refrain from talking to suspicious callers, according to the press release.

“If you don’t feel comfortable, just hang up,” a sheriff’s department employee, who declined to identify himself, said today. “There’s no need to call law enforcement unless you’re a victim.”

Do not give any information to scammers, and contact your actual service provider if you have questions about service, the sheriff’s office advised in the press release.

Victims can call Houghton County Sheriff’s Office at 482-0055.
