CTC seeks safety, health for youth

HOUGHTON – Communities That Care is seeking members from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties for it Community Board, which is phase two of the five phase project. CTC is a way for community members to work together to create a healthier, safer environment for kids and teens, according to Ginny Machiela, CTC coalition coordinator for Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. CTC helps lower rates of youth problem behaviors such as substance abuse, delinquency, school drop-out, violence, teen pregnancy, and depression/anxiety.

Machiela said CTC is looking for anyone who wants to become involved in helping the area’s youth, including youth.

“Anyone in the community can join. Obviously, we want parents. We also want youth. We want young people to help us, because they are the ones we are trying to reach,” Machiela said. CTC is seeking moms, grandparents, anyone who cares about youth and wants to be involved, she added.

“We also want to hit up different sections of the community, because we want to be as diverse as possible,” Machiela said. “The more diversity we have, the more ideas people are bringing to the table, and the more resources they might have. So, we want business people to come. We want law enforcement, justice, government, health, education. We want to hit up all the different sectors, so that we have as many ideas, as many heads working together that is possible.”

Machiela said that even community members without children have a vested intrest in the community.

“You are still invested in the youth of our area, because healthy kids are going to grow into healthier adults, which means more stable families, a better local work force, and then you see reductions in tax payer funded things like law enforcement and social services,” she said.

Anyone in the Houghton/Keweenaw community is welcome to join our new CTC! The tentative dates for our Community Board Training are August 19 and August 26, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Free lunch will be included. We have an online sign-up form available at https://goo.gl/sfJ96b.
