Houghton County school, municipal races set for Nov. election

HOUGHTON – The following candidates are running in Houghton County’s November election.

County government

Prosecuting attorney: Incumbent Democrat Michael Makinen is running against Douglas Edwards, who has no party affiliation.

Sheriff: Republican incumbent Brian Mclean is running against Democratic challenger Derek Poyhonen.

County Commissioner: In District 1, Republican Thomas Tikkanen and Democrat Rick Kasprzak are running for the seat currently held by Republican Eugene Londo. In District 2, Republican incumbent Albert Koskela is running against Democratic challenger Valorie Troesch. In District 5, Republican incumbent Tim Palosaari is running against Democratic challenger George Rajala.

Republican Treasurer Kathleen Beattie and Democrats District 3 Commissioner Anton Pintar, District 4 Commissioner Scott Ala, Clerk Jennifer Lorenz, Mine Inspector Murray Gillis and Drain Commissioner John Pekkala are running unopposed.

School boards

Adams Township School District: Eric Mattila is running for a four-year term. John Asiala, George Eakin, Chad Snell, Bruce Heltunen and Jason Coffey are running for two six-year seats.

Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium & Keweenaw: Philip Halonen, Melanie Parker, James Vertin and Francis Beiring are running for two six-year terms.

Chassell Township Schools: Suzanna Tuomi, Randal Danison, Marcia Messer, Brady Tervo, Kenneth Kytta and Todd Vankleeck are running for four four-year terms.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools: Steven LeClaire and Jennifer Stout are running for two four-year terms. Dallas Bond, Donna Engman, David Maki, Beverly Schmitz, Tera Janke and Jeff Stevens are running for four six-year seats.

Elm-River Township School: Jason Moilanen and James Plutchak are running for two four-year terms.

Hancock Public Schools: Mary Babcock, Paula Nutini and Randy Heinonen are running for three six-year terms.

Houghton-Portage Township School District: Daniel Crane and Robert Wheeler are running for two six-year terms.

Lake Linden-Hubbell Public Schools: Jennifer Beaudette and Rebbecca Loukus are running for two two-year terms. Jeffrey Dennis, Lori Ambuehl and Patricia Burton are running for three six-year seats.

Stanton Township Public Schools: Jill Efraimson and Bradley Pennala are running for two four-year terms.

Ewen-Trout Creek Schools, Baraga Area Schools and L’Anse Area Schools have no candidates.

Villages

South Range: Martin Steinmetz, Therese Parolini and Justin Marier are running for one four-year term as president. Jason Coffey is running for a four-year term as clerk. Lindsay Seefeldt is running for a four-year term as treasurer. Craig Paoli is running for a four-year term as trustee.

Copper City: David Strang is running for president. Reid Rastello, Eleanor Rautio and Kim Spelich are running for three trustee seats. There are no clerk or treasurer candidates.

Calumet: Nathan Anderson and Robert Tarvis, Jr. are running for one four-year term as clerk. Stephani Camp is running for a four-year term as treasurer. Mary Hunt, Tyler Ross, Sidney Dharmavaram and Sandra Johnson are running for two two-year terms as trustees. Richard Buchko, Jim Camp, Virginia Dwyer, Thomas Bowles and Sharon Abramson are running for three four-year terms. There is no candidate for president.

Laurium: Don Bausano is running for a four-year president term. Patricia Golus is running for a four-year clerk term. Jon Koskiniemi is running for a four-year treasurer term. Walter Fish, Robert Erickson, Trevor Hodges and Loralee Miller are running for three four-year trustee terms.

Lake Linden: Glenn Schuldt is running for a two-year president term. Shanda Miller is running for a two-year trustee term. June Schraufnagel, David Tobias, Jason Reese and Allan Hoffman are running for three four-year trustee seats. There are no clerk or treasurer candidates.

Townships

Adams Township: Gerald Heikkinen (D) is running for supervisor. Debbie Pindral (D) is running for clerk. Nancy Immonen (D) is running for treasurer. David Mattila (D) and Diane Keranen (NP) are running for one trustee seat.

Calumet Township: Paul Lehto (R) is running for supervisor. Beth Salmela (R) is running for clerk. Debra Aubin (R) is running for treasurer. Jeff West (R), Tim Gasperich (R), David Yeo (R) and Robert Zander (R) are running for four trustee seats.

Chassell Township: David Mattson (NP) and Christoper Holmes (R) are running for supervisor. Lynn Gierke (NP) is running for clerk. Kelly Holmes (R) is running for treasurer. Daniel Palosaari (R) and Ryan Kuntze (R) are running for two trustee seats. Kevin Kallianen (D) is running for constable.

Duncan Township: Kathleen Allen (NP) is running for clerk. Sandy Margaritis (NP) is running for treasurer. Barbara Passmore (NP) and Joy Sanford (NP) are running for two trustee seats. There were no filings for president.

Elm River Township: John Reynolds (NP) and Joe Siller (NP) are running for supervisor. Rick Baumler Jr. (D) and David Saari (NP) and Richard Trudgeon (NP) are running for two trustee seats. Sherry Brandt (D) is running for clerk. Cheryl Reynolds (NP) is running for treasurer.

Franklin Township: Mary Sears (R) and Roger Sullivan (NP) are running for supervisor. Jodi Mikesch (NP) is running for treasurer. Lawrence Julio (NP) and Daniel Dulong (R) are running for trustee.

Hancock Township: Paul Kemppainen (NP) is running for supervisor. Richard Hauswirth (NP) is running for clerk. Richard Richards (NP) is running for treasurer. Ken Moyle (NP), Julianne Haischer (NP), and Ronald Racine (R) are running for three trustee seats.

Laird Township: Elaine Vassel (D) and Carolyn LeClaire (NP) are running for clerk. Duane Fedie (D) is running for supervisor. Kim Fedie (D) is running for treasurer, Patricia Spencer (D) and Edward Hulkonen Jr. (R) are running for two trustee seats. Francis Tossava (D) is running for constable.

Osceola Township: Steven Karpiak (R) and Rick Greub (D) are running for supervisor. Judy Odgers (R) is running for clerk. Christa Gardner (R) is running for treasurer. Bruce Beaudoin (NP), Donald Wareham (D) and Aaron Janke (R) are running for three trustee seats.

Portage Township: Bruce Petersen (D) is running for supervisor. Heidi Paoli Riutta (D) is running for clerk. Carol Little (R) is running for treasurer. Peggy Lee Anderson (D), John Ollila (D) and Bill Bingham (R) are running for four trustee seats. Roy Britz (R) and Robert Laux (R) are running for two constable positions.

Quincy Township: Glenn North (R) is running for supervisor. Dolores Kangas (D) is running for clerk. Cheri Raasio (R) is running for treasurer. Chris Kangas (D) and Dennis Raasio (R) are running for two trustee seats.

Schoolcraft Township: Joel Keranen (R) is running for treasurer. Gary Wenberg (R) is running for clerk. Dennis Racine (D) is running for treasurer. Kevin Codere (D), Susan Marcotte (D) and Josh Loukus (R) are running for three trustee terms.

Stanton Township: John Botto (NP), Marv Heinonen (NP) and David Sakari (NP) are running for supervisor. Kara Heinonen (R) is running for clerk. Lori Anderson (R) is running for treasurer. Janet Larson (R), Gerald Campbell (NP), Robert Mantta (NP) and Katie Tormala (NP) are running for two trustee seats.

Torch Lake Township: Brian Cadwell (D) is running for supervisor. Mary Isola (D) is running for clerk. Diane Zurcher (R) is running for treasurer. Lou Ambuehl (R) and Scott Sapino (D) are running for trustee.

Cities

Hancock: Ron Blau is running in Precinct 1. Dan Seguin is running in Precinct 2. Ward 3 has no candidates. Neither does an at-large partial term.

Houghton: Philip Foltz, Rachel Lankton and John Sullivan are running for three four-year terms. Bob Backon is running for a two-year term.
