Plans to plant 3,200 trees on tribal land

BARAGA – The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will plant 3,200 trees on four acres of tribal land in Ontonagon County.

“The Keweenaw Bay Tribal Council has a vital concern for its timber resources,” the KBIC resolution states.

Under the Non-Recurring Forest Development Program, the now non-forested field will be clear cut so conifer and hardwoods can be planted there in the spring.

Tribal employees will spend about 100 hours planting 800 conifer and hardwood trees per acre on the plot located in the west half of the northwest quarter of section 26, township 53N, range 38W in Ontonagon County. The varieties of trees will include some of the following: red pine, white pine, white spruce, white cedar, paper birch, sugar maple and red maple.

The estimated costs are not to exceed $960 per acre for the trees, and $510 per acre for tree protectors for 1,600 of the trees most susceptible to browsing deer. The estimated total cost of the project is $5,880.

In other news, the tribe bought a cable-hoist garbage truck for $98,800 from CarCo to replace an old one with about 650,000 miles, the high mileage not uncommon on these types of trucks.
