Street project coming up on home stretch

HANCOCK – The reconstruction of Quincy Street in Hancock has proceeded on the 400 and 500 blocks much as it did for the previous four blocks, according to Al Anderson.

Anderson, project manager for the Michigan Department of Transportation Ishpeming Transportation Service Center, said most of the curbs and gutters are installed in the 400 and 500 blocks, and the utilities and sewer pipes have been installed, so paving should begin Thursday or Friday.

“They’re putting sand and gravel from Dakota Street to Mine Street,” Anderson said of the preparations for paving.

The next two-block section of Quincy Street will be the last, Anderson said.

“They’ll be doing some of the (road surface) removal after Labor Day,” he said.

After the final two-block section of the street is complete, and the final layer of asphalt has been laid down on the entire street, Anderson said work will begin on removal of the temporary traffic signal where Quincy Street, Hancock Street and Lincoln Drive meet. Where Hancock Street was widened for two-way traffic at the triangle west of the Krist Convenience Store will be returned to its proper width.

“At that point the traffic will be returned to what it was before the construction,” he said.

Anderson said the project is progressing as planned, and it’s expected to be finished at the end of October.

All downtown Hancock businesses are open during construction. Parking is available on side streets and in city parking lots.
