St. Vincent de Paul gets large donation

HANCOCK — The Keweenaw Community Foundation and Tadych’s Econo Foods of Houghton partnered this year to help the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry in Hancock stock its shelves for the Easter season, according to a KICF release.

As a result of the partnering, the food pantry received a large food donation through a grant from KCF’s Food Initiative Fund amounting to $1,557.57, and an in-kind contribution from Tadych’s Econo Foods of $500, according to a release from KCF.

“We got the donations the first week of April,” Tom Vichich of St. Vincent de Paul’s Resurrection Conference Food Pantry said in a telephone interview. “There are three pallets, and so far we’ve received two. We should get the third one sometime next week.”

From October 2016 through February 2017, the pantry has provided 927 bags of groceries to 554 individuals, Vichich said.

The food pantry has had several locations over the years, but is now located at 206 Quincy Street in Hancock, next door to the St. Vincent de Paul Resale Store.

“We’re happy to to have this new space,” Vichich is quoted as saying, “and very grateful to Keweenaw Community Foundation and Econo Foods for their generous support.”

Jim Vivian, executive director at KCF, said this was one of those instances when every came together and worked out well.

“After hearing a radio interview about the new location for the food pantry,” Vivian is quoted as saying, “the staff at KCF realized this was the right fit for the moneys we had available to address food needs in the Keweenaw. Making connections that help the community is one of the most important things we do as a community foundation.”
