LANSING, Mich. (AP) – A group that advocates for overhauling how Michigan draws legislative and congressional district lines plans more than 30 town hall-style events this fall on redistricting.

The League of Women Voters of Michigan announced the events Friday. The educational campaign could pave the way for a 2016 ballot initiative.

The group will discuss how lawmakers set districts and if an independent commission should be used instead.

The league contends politicians are choosing their voters instead of voters choosing their representatives.

Republicans controlled the redistricting process in 2001 and 2011.

The GOP has an edge in the U.S. House delegation and controls the Legislature.

Some experts doubt a commission would remove partisanship and say geography is as responsible as gerrymandering for Republicans’ advantage.
