BHK to develop reading partnership

HOUGHTON – BHK and Wells Fargo Bank have partnered to offer the “Reading First Program,” according to Cheryl Mills, executive director of BHK.

Tina Nelson, manager of the Wells Fargo Bank’s College Avenue branch, contacted Mills and offered the program, saying: “We’d like to partner and have our staff come and read to the kids.”

Nelson, who herself was once a “Head Start child,” as Mills put it, and two male coworkers “have started 10-week sessions in all our classrooms at the Ryan Center and then they’re moving here, and they leave the books with the children’s classrooms,” said Mills.

The involvement of the bank employees does not end with the reading program.

“They’ve offered to ride our bus when we need them to,” said Mills, referring to the rule that states in addition to the driver, an adult must be present on the bus when transporting children.

“We love to have volunteers – especially men that come – to the classrooms,” Mills said. “It’s been a really great partnership,” said Mills. “Partnerships are key in this area.”
