Deadline approaching for Elks scholarship

Area high school students can apply for Elks scholarships, but the deadline is approaching.

According to a release from U.P. District Elks Scholarship Chairman John Pickard, the Elks National Foundation is awarding $3.74 million. The Most Valuable Student scholarship is available to all high school seniors, provided they are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.

Male and females compete separately for the MVS scholarship, the release said, and the scholarship will help 500 stuents attend college. Top scholarhsips ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 will be awarded to twenty, and the remaining 480 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships. Completed applications must be turned in to the local lodge – 25701 Wedge Street in Calumet – no later than Dec. 4.
