Father charged in death of infant son

HOUGHTON – A Hancock man accused of involuntarily killing his 10-week-old son in July, as well as breaking and entering into a Finlandia University office in October, was arraigned Wednesday in 97th District Court.

Benjamin Reilly, 27, allegedly placed his son in an unsafe sleeping environment after providing the child with an alcoholic beverage. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony, as well as two counts of second-degree child abuse, a five-year felony.

Reilly is also accused of breaking into a Finlandia University office with intent to commit a larceny on Oct. 21, a 10-year felony. He was also charged with receiving and concealing property stolen from the office, which included electronic equipment and bicycles, according to court documents. That felony is punishable by five years.

Police recovered some of the stolen equipment after executing a search warrant.

Reilly also faces charges of third-degree fleeing and eluding police, a five-year felony, and making a false report of a larceny, a four-year felony.

Reilly’s bond was set at $1.5 million.

“Jesus,” Reilly said, hearing the amount.

Assistant Prosecutor Brittany Bulleit said Reilly is a “significant danger” to the community, citing the severity of the charges.

“…[H]e was being investigated in the death of his child, and he continued to commit significant crimes,” she said.

“Allegedly,” Judge Mark Wisti added.

Reilly is set for a probable cause hearing in a week and a preliminary hearing in three weeks.
