Human remains found in Alger County identified

Officials at the Michigan State Police post in Negaunee Township have identified human remains found by hunters late last month in Alger County.

The skeletal remains of Victor Wayne Salo, 40, found in Munising Township on Oct. 30, were positively identified through dental records, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police.

Salo was believed to have died about two years ago based on the advanced decomposition of his remains, said Sgt. Kevin Dowling, although his manner of death is undetermined.

A missing persons report was never filed, as he was known by family members to live a “transient lifestyle” with no permanent address listed in his name. Family members who reside in Alger County had not reported seeing Salo in the past two years.

Police believe he was camping near where his remains were located.

An investigation into the incident, which is now closed, did not hint to foul play, said Dowling.

Assisting the Michigan State Police in the investigation were the U.S. Forest Service, Munising Field Office, Munising Police Department, Alger County Sheriff’s Department, Alger County EMS, Alger County Medical Examiner, Marquette County Medical Examiner, UP Health System-Marquette and Dr. Christopher Wilkinson, DDS.
