Fatal snowmobile accident

CALUMET TOWNSHIP – A snowmobile accident in Calumet Township resulted in the death of Christopher Scott Houchin, 21, of Salem, Wisconsin, according to a news release issued by the Michigan State Police Post in Calumet.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Houchin was traveling south on Trail No. 3 near Copper City when his snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree, the release stated.

Houchin was transported to UP Health System – Portage, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to be a factor. A State Police accident investigator was called to the scene, the report stated.

Assisting at the scene were the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Laurium Police Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Calumet Township First Responders, Keweenaw Trail Service, and Superior Service, according to the report.
