No contest: Laplander’s plea drops charge with life term

HOUGHTON – A Calumet man pleaded no contest in Houghton County Circuit Court Wednesday to breaking into a building to steal money, as well as driving away a car.

Isaac Laplander, 36, is charged with unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, a five-year felony, and breaking and entering into a building with intent to commit larceny, a 10-year felony.

Laplander had allegedly broken into a safe at Harter’s Auto Supply in Calumet last year. While out on bond on that charge, he stole a Camaro from Kissel Chevrolet, which he used to drive to Wisconsin. He allegedly committed additional crimes there.

In exchange for his no contest plea, a breaking and entering charge from the Kissel incident was dismissed, as was a life felony charge of safebreaking at Harter’s.

Laplander pleaded no contest due to intoxication and potential civil liability. Evidence to support his plea came from surveillance footage showing him taking money and other items out of the safe at Harter’s and footage from Hancock and Wisconsin showing Laplander with the Camaro.

Sentencing is scheduled in approximately four weeks. Laplander’s attorney, David Gemignani, asked for the right to extend the sentencing date to give Laplander more time for restitution.
