Softball field named

HANCOCK – The Hancock City Council Wednesday approved naming the softball field at the Driving Park after longtime softball player and promoter Gordy Schaaf.

Recreation Commission Chairman John Haeussler, who presented the request for naming the field, said Schaaf, who is 88 years old, played and promoted softball in Hancock for more than 45 years.

Schaaf was inducted into the Michigan Softball Hall of Fame in 1991.

“I can’t think of someone who was more important to softball,” he said.

The council voted unanimously to name the softball field after Gordy Schaaf.

Also approved unanimously was the placing of No Smoking signs at the ball fields.
