KBIC to upgrade L’Anse legion post

BARAGA – Keweenaw Bay Indian Community decided to fund upgrades to the L’Anse American Legion Post 144 Thursday.

“This is really great,” said KBIC Tribal Council member Doreen Blaker. “I’m glad we decided to donate the entire request.”

L’Anse Post Commander Dan Larson wrote to the tribe last month asking if KBIC would help them cover the $7,000 cost of a new chair lift since the post’s old one is broken, as well as $6,321 for new front doors to make the post more accessible.

“Due to the high number of elderly veterans that are unable to access our facility due to disabilities we find this is an increasing need,” Larson wrote. “Our facility is also used for a number of charitable fund raisers for people in need of help in our community and some of these cannot access our facility either and we are a small community that provides services for all.”

“We have asked our state legislators and even the state American Legion and no funds are available to help,”Larson wrote.
