Sawaski waives hearing

HOUGHTON – A former Houghton High School athletic director, teacher and coach was bound over to Houghton County Circuit Court Monday on charges of possessing and seeking child pornography.

Don Sawaski, 71, of Houghton, waived his preliminary hearing. He is charged with two counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, a four-year felony, and using a computer to seek and access such material, a seven-year felony.

Sawaski was not present in court Monday.

Sawaski was arrested in Longmont, Colorado, in January on a charge of being a fugitive from justice from Michigan.

In January, law enforcement sources said Sawaski, who formerly coached football and track, was being investigated on charges of sexually assaulting high school athletes in the 1970s and early 1980s.

His Circuit Court arraignment is set for 10 a.m. on May 9.

Sawaski posted 10 percent of a $250,000 bond. Under the terms of his bond, Sawaski must remain in Houghton County, cannot have contact with anyone under 17 and cannot set foot on school property.
