Springtime of wonder emerges yet again

HOUGHTON – It looks like the snow is finally gone and spring is here, and it’s possible for May through August, temperatures in the Copper Country could be above normal, according to Robin Turner.

Turner, who is meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service Negaunee Township office, said May should be a warm one.

“We have a higher than normal probability of above normal temperatures,” he said. “May could also be drier than normal.”

Turner said the average high and low temperatures for April were actually above normal. The normal average high for the Hancock/Houghton area for April is 46.9 degrees, but the actual average was 44 degrees. The normal average low for the month is 35.9 degrees and the actual average low was 38.

“April was warmer than normal,” he said.

For May, June, July and August, Turner said its expected temperatures will above normal, but the precipitation could below, above or at normal.

The average high for May is 61 degrees, Turner said, with an average low of 39.4.

“It has started off cold,” he said of May temperatures.

The average highs and lows for June are 70.2 and 48.4 degrees, Turner said. The average highs and lows for July are 75.3 and 54.2. The average precipitation for May is 2.5 inches, June 2.58 inches and July 2.49 inches.

Turner said the highs today should be 40 to 45 degrees, with lows tonight of 33 degrees, but warmer temperatures are coming. Thursday should be 61 degrees and Friday should be 72 degrees.

“Friday is going to be a great day,” he said.

But the cool temperatures should be back with high Saturday of 60, mid 50s Sunday and 60 on Monday.

As usual, Turner said temperatures will be cooler at the lake shores.
