Fire consumes home

CENTENNIAL HEIGHTS – A fire caused significant damage at a Calumet Township home Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported about noon, said Houghton County Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Bray.

Chester Ennis, who lives in the First Street house with his wife, said they were sleeping when their fire alarm went off.

“We had about two minutes before the whole upstairs was completely engulfed,” he said.

Ennis and his wife made it out safely, he said. Two of their cats died in the fire, Ennis said. Two dogs and three other cats made it out.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of Friday afternoon.

The fire appeared to be centered in the middle of the upstairs, Ennis said. Most of their possessions, including their computer and his ham radio, are in the upstairs portion of the house, Ennis said.

“You always think you’ve got enough time to grab a few things, and you don’t,” he said.

Ennis has been living in the house for about five years. They hadn’t made any living arrangements yet, Ennis said, although he has family in the area.

“We all made it out OK,” he said. “That’s what I’m glad for. I just nobody nobody gets hurt fighting the fire.”
