Lake Linden plans water rate increase

LAKE LINDEN – Lake Linden could increase its water rate for the first time in three years.

The Village Council will hold a public hearing before its September meeting on an increase in the rate.

Current rates, set in September 2013, are $40.02 for the two-month base rate and an additional $4.56 for every 1,000 gallons after 4,000 gallons.

The village is considering the increase as a response to rate increases in the meantime from Upper Peninsula Power Co.

A 2 percent rate increase with a base rate change of $1 would generate an additional $4,100 for the village a year, said Clerk Bob Poirier.

If the council approves the change in September, it will take effect on the November billing.

After the council voted to repair water and sewer lines on Front and 12th streets, Trustee James Aittama said revenue from a higher water rate give the village the funds to repair problems.

“We should have $150,000 sitting in the bank in that account at all times,” he said.
