Procession honors fallen Firefighters

Ontonagon County communities, residents, and fire departments joined with its Upper Peninsula neighbors Tuesday in showing support for the Beartown firefighters who lost their lives in a traffic crash on Saturday.

The first community in Ontonagon County that the procession bringing the bodies of Alan Swartz and James Shelifoe passed through was Bergland, where community members waved flags and bowed their heads.

From Bergland, the mile-long procession of fire trucks, law enforcement vehicles and emergency vehicles went through Ewen. Tow vehicles parked on the side of the road with the emergency lights flashing.

A large turnout gathered in Bruce Crossing, with people coming two hours before the procession arrived. In Bruce Crossing the L’Anse and Baraga fire departments took over the lead of the procession.

From Bruce Crossing to Mass City, cars lined along U.S. 45.

The final community in Ontonagon County to come out was in Mass City/Greenland, with local fire departments joining in the procession.
