Feast celebrates lives in midst of tragedy

ZEBA – Hundreds of people enjoyed bountiful feasts following the funerals of AJ Swartz and Jimmy Shelifoe, much of it brought by Keweenaw Indian Community residents in response to the tragic situation at hand.

Mounds of fresh frybread loomed over huge hot pans of just about anything you can think of having for dinner, salads galore and a dessert table laden with lots of tempting treats.

“The support has been overwhelming and heartfelt,” KBIC said in a recent press release. “It is all very much appreciated.”

The widespread outpouring of community support for the fallen firemen who were killed in an accident last weekend has resulted in many wanting to donate to the victim’s families, as well as those of the many injured.

Beartown Firefighters Relief Fund, account number 201144112 has been set up at the Superior National Bank. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to any branch bank.

In addition, donations being accepted at the KBIC Tribal Center, 16429 Beartown Road, Baraga, Michigan, 49908.
