BARAGA Baraga Village Council pursued paving projects and other matters at its monthly meeting Tuesday.

UP Engineers & Architects Project Manager Chris Holmes earned the $29,100 the company requested for time and materials to accomplish preliminary studies the village needs done so it can proceed with paving Keweenaw Avenue next year. The council unanimously approved the projected project cost of $200,200, which includes the initial request.

“I’m hoping this is a high number,” Holmes said of the estimated cost.

The firm will also be paid up to $2,500 to survey and perform soil borings on Buckland Drive at the same time it’s working on Keweenaw Avenue. As part of the village’s ongoing street repairs, Buckland will be next on the street-repair list, and is expected to be completed in 2018.

Holmes plans to send a substantial completion report on the latest Fifth Street project, for the council to consider at its next meeting set for Nov. 8.

In other news, the council set Halloween hours and heard from Baraga Village Police Chief Irv Smith that he would appreciate the help of the village Fire Department personnel to look for trouble on the night before the holiday, when pranksters are typically active.

“I’m thinking Sunday’s going to be a busy night,” Smith informed the council. He also reported the police department logged 320 hours, answered 37 complaints, performed 360 property checks and arrested six people while traveling a whopping 2,068 miles in September.

Village police will cruise the streets during “Trick or Treat” hours, which the council set from 4 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

In other action, the council asks decorations be removed from the Baraga Village Cemetery by Oct. 31, after which the items will be trashed as the village cleans the site up before winter.
