Home stretch: Quincy streetscaping set to begin next week

HANCOCK – With reconstruction work on the final two blocks of Quincy Street in Hancock coming to an end, the work on the streetscape can begin, hopefully next week, according to Al Anderson.

Anderson, project manager for the Michigan Department of Transportation Ishpeming Transportation Service Center, said as of Friday, trees for the streetscape hadn’t arrived. It is thought they will be available for planting sometime next week.

The streetscape plan calls for metal bicycle racks, benches and trash receptacles, all of which will be removable for winter.

“It’s up to the city,” he said about whether or not the racks, benches and receptacles will be removed during winter.

The streetscape will be done on just the 100 block of Quincy Street for now, so people can see what the street will look like with those features installed, Anderson said.

Besides the trees, Anderson said there will be other plantings to be installed for the streetscape. Those plantings can go down now and last through the winter.

“This is the normal time for planting,” he said.

On the final two blocks of Quincy Street, Anderson said the initial layers of asphalt have been put down. The plan now is to begin to put down the final layer of asphalt on Reservation Street and on Quincy Street from Reservation to Lincoln Drive next week.

Although brick pavers were installed on Shelden Avenue in Houghton when it was reconstructed several years ago, Anderson said doing the same on Quincy Street was not considered as an option.

Anderson said the project is still expected to be completed by the end of October.
