Trades students prepare post office for winter

PAINESDALE – Since the U.S. Postal Service signed a new 10-year lease agreement with Adams Township Schools, the Jeffers High School building trades class is going to be busy.

The postal service rents the Painesdale Post Office from the school district, which has to put a new roof on the building as soon as possible.

While the students won’t be working on the post office roof, Superintendent Tim Keteri said there’s plenty of other jobs to keep the class busy while the snow flies.

“The trades class will be getting the other part of the building ready over the winter,” Keteri said, adding having the class involved will not only keep renovation costs down, it will also give the students some valuable hands-on experience. “It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Traverse Engineering, which is preparing the specifications for the school’s bid proposal to replace the leaky roof, has estimated contracting will cost $20,000 to $25,000.

Ideally, the new roof will be in place before winter hits.

“I hope we will be getting the roof on before deer season,” Keteri said.

In other news from Wednesday’s School Board meeting, recent counts indicate district enrollment is up by more than 20 students.

South Range Elementary School Principal Kim Harris asked people to continue to turn in box tops for education and grocery receipts to benefit the school’s booster club.
