Chassell Schools to start improvement projects

CHASSELL -Howard Parmentier, Chassell Township Schools superintendent, said thanks to the generosity of the voters of the township, the board can begin to move ahead with upcoming projects. A requested bond for school improvements was approved Tuesday, allowing the school to proceed with much needed security upgrades and improvements to the buildings and grounds.

There are some 14 projects that school officials would like to address, Parmentier said. The project list was the result of several meetings with school staff, the school board, parents and community members. Once the projects were decided upon, the next step was to get a cost for each item.

“On everything that we did, we got all those estimates for all those ideas, Parmentier said. “We added up all our costs, and what we ended up doing was putting a 10 percent contingency on each of them, just because they’re all estimates. Hopefully, we were pretty good with that.” The projects include everything from improving the student drop-off area to resurfacing the basketball court to lighting, to putting fire extinguishers in every classroom.

Parmentier said there will be a series of discussions during the next couple of regular monthly school board meeting to prioritize the list to determine which projects should be done in what order.

“The proposals we have right now are for the driveway, our inner and outer doors,” Parmentier said. “We have security camera upgrades that will be done. It’s only around $3,100 but just to get better cameras, to see maybe who is doing things they shouldn’t be to lockers. Then we have the possibility of trades building addition, the trades equipment we’re looking for, we’re looking for signage for the building. I’m sure that’s going to be a priority.”
