Gas explosion, fire at SEMCO

Some L’Anse residents without heat

L’ANSE — A collision at a SEMCO substation caused an explosion and fire, but no one was injured, according to Baraga County Sheriff Rick Johnson.

Johnson said at about 3:43 a.m. today, a vehicle ran off U.S. 41 and struck a gas delivery line, which in turn caused an explosion and fire. The driver wasn’t injured in the crash, nor was anyone at the substation.

Gas service to about 1,200 gas customers in parts of the village of L’Anse and L’Anse Township will be disrupted for two to three days while repairs are made, Johnson said.

Warming centers have been set up at Baraga Schools, Ojibwa College and the Big Bucks Bingo Hall for people whose residences use gas for heat, Johnson said.

“We’re working with emergency management,” he said.

Johnson said L’Anse Fire Department responded to the scene and put the fire out. A section of U.S. 41 was closed while the fire was being fought.

Assisting at the scene was the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police.

Johnson said the incident is being looked into.

“The sheriff’s office is investigating the accident,” he said.
