Art, writing exhibit at MTU

The community is invited to visit an outstanding exhibition of art and writing on display now at Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center Lobby. The show features work by young people — participants in the North Woods Kids project — from the western Upper Peninsula.

North Woods Kids is an annual K-12 student writing and art exhibition and competition inspired by the picture book “North Woods Girl”, by Aimée Bissonette and sponsored by Michigan Tech’s English Education Program with support from the Copper Country Reading Council, Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative and the Copper Country Community Arts Center.

Winners in the categories of writing and visual art for 2016 include students from CLK Elementary, Ewen-Trout Creek, Houghton Elementary, Jeffers Middle School and L’Anse Middle School. Work was submitted in response to the prompt: “What would our elders’ lives have been like when they were North Woods kids?”

The exhibition will be on display in MTU’s Great Lakes Research Center through March 8 and will move to the Portage Lake District Library mid-March through April.
