Houghton team sweeps math competition

It was a historic day at the Upper Peninsula Mathcounts competition. For the first time in anyone’s memory, one team captured all ten of the final round positions. Houghton’s team captured the top 12 places and earned all six qualifying slots for the state championship in March. Strong competition also lead to the highest average score ever recorded at this competition.

Houghton’s first team of 8th grader Samuel Fang and 7th graders Sonia Jin, Linda Tang and Seojun Yoon put together a great competition to outpace all the other teams of four. In second place was Kingsford’s all 8th grade team of Meghana Choragudi, Katherine Erickson, Marli Smith, and Derrick Sirov. In third place was Hancock’s all 7th grade team of Alexis Babcock, Connor Bevan, Elanor Tchida, and Trevor Borke. Hancock was narrowly ahead of fourth place Norway-Vulcan and fifth place Father Marquette.

In the individual competition, Sonia Jin beat out the written round leader Samuel Fang in a tight final competition for the victory. The top six competitors all qualify for the Mathcounts State Championships held at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren Michigan next month.

1 Sonia Jin

2 Samuel Fang

3 Brian Knewtson

4 Linda Tang

5 Seojun Yoon
