Holocaust speaker in Hancock

Irene Miller, Holocaust survivor and author of “Into No Man’s Land: A Historical Memoir” will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Temple Jacob, in Hancock. The public is invited. A brief tour of Temple Jacob will be offered at 7 p.m. Copies of her book will be for sale after the talk. Parking is available at the Marina and at the bank down the street.

Her website states that she “will take you on a survival journey little written and known about. You will sleep in the winter under an open sky on the no man’s land; you will freeze in a Siberian labor camp where the bears come to your door front. In Uzbekistan, you will live on boiled grass or broiled onions, and shiver with malaria. You will spend years in orphanages. When this is over you will wonder how a child with this background grows up to become a positive, creative, accomplished woman with a joy of living and love to share. “

Since her retirement from a career in healthcare, Miller has spoken about her life during the Holocaustin Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Canada, at professional conferences, for military groups, labor unions, churches, synagogues, schools, and universities. Her book, published in 2012, has been used by many book clubs and discussion groups. The PBS documentary “Irene; Child of the Holocaust” premiered December 2016. By sharing her story, she hopes to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity.

She will speak to students at Houghton High School on Thursday.
