Keweenaw County to conduct Annual Public Safety Day

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The Keweenaw County Public Safety Day will have several different demonstrations, including the use of the Jaws of Life, emergency service vehicles, and games and activities for kids of all ages.

MOHAWK — Keweenaw County will conduct its second Public Safety Day, Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mohawk Park. The safety day will feature several Keweenaw County Emergency Service organizations.

Last year’s event was so popular that Sheriff Bill Luokkanen, and several other officials decided on that day last year, they would conduct another one this year.

Sheriff Bill Luokkanen said there will be canine demonstrations with Deputy Dogo, of the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, along with equipment and vehicles of the Keweenaw County Sheriff Off-Road Rescue. Volunteer fire departments from Allouez Township, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor, Lac La Belle, and Sherman Township will be present with trucks and equipment, and there will be a Jaws of Life demonstration, as well. The County Road Commission will have some of their big equipment on the grounds, as they did last year, and Mercy EMS will have a vehicle present, too.

As with last year, the smoke house will be back, along with demonstrations by firefighters dressing in the special clothing they use, using air packs, and masks.

“The children can see that fire fighters are just people beneath all the equipment,” Luokkanen said, “and there is never a need to fear them.”

The bouncy house will be back again, Luokkanen said, along with kids’ games and activities.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. the participants of a classic car show will be en route to Copper Harbor, and they will do a slow drive-by, Luokkanen said, so people attending the Public Safety Day can see the classic and antique vehicles.

There will be free hot dogs, chips, pop, and ice cream, and as with last year, Luokkanen will cook the hotdogs.

The event is for the public to meet and greet members of the law enforcement, fire, medical services, and other groups serving them, Luokkanen said.

“We encourage all members of the public to come and enjoy the day,” Luokkanen said.
