Schaefer leads by example as she runs for supervisor

Joshua Vissers/Daily Mining Gazette Polly Schaefer is running for township supervisor in L’Anse.

Polly Schaefer is running for L’Anse Township Supervisor in the Nov. 6 election against current supervisor Pete Magaraggia.

“I think we need some leadership in that role,” she said.

Schaefer is committed to making the most of grants and other funding sources before going to taxpayers for more money. She’s also interested in pursuing a Recreational Authority that would allow the township to team up with L’Anse village and other governing bodies to work on park projects and events.

She’s worked on the Baraga County Economic Development Board and currently serves as treasurer for the L’Anse Meadowbrook Arena and on the Baraga County Recreation Committee. Schaefer also helped to form several youth programs including the Baraga County Volleyball League, L’Anse Area Flag Football program, the Youth of Baraga County and volunteered as a coach for youth hockey and little league baseball.

Schaefer currently works at Weyerhaeuser, formerly Plum Creek. She says her work with budgets and contracts there is good experience for working on the township board. She’s also attended an online citizen’s planning course. Schaefer worked for four years as secretary on the township planning commission that passed L’Anse township’s current master plan and zoning ordinances.

She’s currently working online to earn her business administration degree through Gogebic Community College.

Schaefer has lived in L’Anse her entire life. She’s married and has two sons. She worked for 13 years as a licensed real estate broker. Her grandmother was county treasurer for over 25 years. Schaefer enjoys hunting, fishing and hockey.
