KIBC held primary Saturday

BARAGA — The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) held its primary election Saturday for seats on the Tribal Council and the role of chief judge.

Of the 10 candidates running for the two open seats in the Baraga District, four candidates move on to the Dec. 15 general election.

Kim Klopstein received the most votes with 105. The only incumbent running in the district, Warren “Chris” Swartz, Jr. won 84 votes. Elizabeth “Beth” Connor and Sue Ellen “Suzie” Elmblad will also be moving into the general election with 66 and 62 votes, respectively.

The six candidates for the Baraga District seats who were eliminated totaled 204 votes. When those votes are recast in the general election, they could easily swing the election in favor of any candidate.

In the L’Anse District, incumbents Jennifer Misegan and Susan J. LaFernier hold the top spots with 57 and 50 votes, respectively. Dale F. Goodreau with 48 votes and Jean (Halverson) Jokinen with 40 votes will join them in the general election.

The four eliminated candidates only gathered 104 votes in this district, but when recast in December it is still enough to give any candidate a chance at victory.

Bill Jondrea with 206 votes and the incumbent Bradley T. Dakota with 171 votes move on to the general election for chief judge.

The now-eliminated Paul D. Smith received 53 votes. While it may be a fraction of the other candidates’ totals, it is still enough to swing the election in favor of either of the remaining candidates.

Voter registration also reopens on Nov. 5, according to election board chairwoman Diana Chaudier, giving new voters the chance to enroll and increase the vote count in December.

Registration will close again on Nov. 15. Registration can be completed through the Department of Enrollment, according to the KBIC website.

Absentee ballots can still be requested until Nov. 21, Chaudier said.
