Ontonagon re-hires Bobula as superintendent

The Ontonagon Area School District Board agreed to a new contract with current superintendent and principal Jim Bobula.

While no details were given at Monday’s board meeting, the decision to re-hire Bobula was unanimous.

The terms and conditions of the contract are yet to be determined. The new contract is to be signed by June 30.

While Bobula will remain in his position, Heather Beck resigned her position as assistant volleyball coach. That position will be posted immediately.

The board also agreed to increase the pay for substitute staff to $9.45 per hour due to an increase in the minimum wage, according to Bobula.

Bobula also received permission from the board to look at the cost of updating the football field lighting system.

“Our lights are 38 years old, and we need to replace them,” Bobula told the Gazette.

The board is also looking at what it is going to cost to repair a leak in the school’s gas boiler system.

Bobula and the board heard about the district championship won by the Ontonagon robotics team from adviser Glen Beck.

The robotics team consists of Phil Voss, Luke Soumis, Abby Ollila, Isaiah and Whitney Rule. John Ollila is the assistant instructor.

The board approved the overnight travel request for the Kingsford District tournament , where the Gladiator Robotics team took first. The board also approved the travel request for the next tournament, which will be at Sault Saint Marie April 4-6.

The February General Fund invoices totaled $24,775, while the approved March General Fund invoices totaled $79,786.

In Bobula’s report from the Administrative Committee, he said the district is looking at accounting procedures.

Also in his report Bobula said the Community that Cares health survey will be taken this week, the National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony will be on Wednesday, Classroom ORV/ATV safety course will bb March 25-26 and that Upper Peninsula Power Company will present a Path to Ground program on March 26 for fourth- and fifth-graders.

The NHS middle school dance will be from 7-10 p.m. March 29. On April 18, 30 Ontonagon students will participate in an art fair at Finlandia University.

Spanish students traveled to Northern Michigan University last Friday to participate in a Spanish day.

SAT/PSAT testing will take place on April 9.
