Missing Houghton woman found

HOUGHTON — A Houghton woman with Alzheimer’s disease was found Sunday afternoon after a nearly day-long search.

Eva Vencato, 82, was found about 2:35 p.m. just off the Bill Nicholls Trail near Houghton Canal Road and Old Mill Hill Road.

She was conscious when found, said Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly. She was transported to UP Health System – Portage.

Vencato had wandered off from her home on Sugar Maple Lane, located behind the former ShopKo building. She was reported as missing about 4 p.m. Saturday, three hours after she was last seen.

Assisting the Houghton Police Department were Superior Search and Rescue, Michigan State Police, Hancock Police Department, Houghton Fire Department, Michigan Technological University Public Safety, U.S. Coast Guard, Civil Air Patrol, Houghton County Emergency Measures, and numerous citizen volunteers.

At about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, there were around 100 people searching for Vencato, Donnelly said. The search was coordinated r of the former Shopko building.

“The public assistance from all the first responders, police and masses of volunteers are much appreciated,” Donnelly said.
