LaBlanc faces federal manslaughter charges

MARQUETTE — Federal charges have been filed against a Wisconsin man accused of killing a Baraga man in a drunk-driving incident in June.

Christopher LaBlanc is alleged to have hit Orlando Moreno, 29, on Superior Avenue in Baraga while visibly impaired on June 8.

Charges were originally brought in state court in Baraga County. Because the incident occurred on Keweenaw Bay Indian Community land and Moreno is Native American, the case was dropped and moved to federal court.

LaBlanc was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Aug. 28. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison and pay up to $250,000. He could also serve up to five years probation and undergo up to three years of supervised released.
