Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education March meeting

Superintendent George Stockero updated the board on the statewide shutdown of K-12 schools. Stockero said that he and the local superintendents have met together twice in the last five days. In those meetings, the superintendents have had briefings from the Health Department. It is important to know that with the original spring break that was planned, students are out for 10 days during this state shutdown. So far Houghton County has had 3 snow days and Baraga County has had 2 snow days. Schools get an automatic 6 snow days and can ask for up to 3 more. If the shutdown does not go on any longer than the current mandate and the 3 extra days are granted, schools are looking at making up 3 to 4 days. Superintendents know that many families have questions and the state’s situation continues to change every day. Unfortunately, there are many questions we cannot answer at this time. Schools are getting many questions like, what if schools are out longer, and what if schools do not come back at all this school year, will the schools provide on-line learning? We, as school superintendents, ask that parents have patience with us. We are only in our second day of a government shutdown and based on the length of the shutdown, the make-up should not be too bad. The local superintendents and I will continue to communicate with the public as new information becomes available to us.

The board conducted its annual evaluation of superintendent Stockero. The board voted unanimously to give Stockero a Highly Effective rating and renew his contract. The board then went a step further, voting to place a letter of accommodation in Stockero’s file praising him for his handling of the unusual circumstances that schools are facing at this time. Stockero has brought the local superintendents together, along with the Health Department and governmental agencies, to make sure all are informed and working together. Stockero, thanked his administration team. “They have been a great resource and ready to help not only me, but any local superintendents,” Stockero said.

In other action, the Board:

— Nominated SKY for the Copper Country Association of School Boards Community Education Leadership Award.

— Approved purchase of Truck and Plow from Copper Country Ford.
