KBIC on top of fishing vessel accident
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) would like to provide this opportunity to follow up on the potential threat posed by a commercial fishing tug in the Portage Lake waterway near South Entry. As of March 3, the leak has been stopped and contaminated water has been removed and disposed of. The U.S. Coast Guard has provided technical assistance and oversight throughout the duration of the situation and is satisfied that the vessel no longer poses a threat to the waterway. KBIC will continue to monitor the vessel and the waterway and keep partners informed. Plans are to remove the vessel from the water in the spring for further inspection. KBIC would like to thank all of our Tribal, State, and Federal partners that have been working together to address the situation. Questions may be directed to our Tribal President’s Office and our Natural Resources Department.
Miigwech for working together for a better community.
