UP Trappers announce dates and activities for Annual Trappers Convention/ Outdoor Expo

ESCANABA – The Annual Trapper’s Convention/Outdoor Expo will be held July 10 and 11 at The U.P State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, Michigan. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Once again our convention coordinator, Roy Dahlgren, has put together an outstanding list of presenters. This event will include nine seminars with top trappers and outdoorsmen and women giving tips and techniques on capturing several different species of fur bearers found in North America. Jeff Hagerty, the inventor of the HAGz Bracket, will be doing a demo on mink, muskrat, and beaver. Ed Schneider from Kansas will be showing how to modify coyote sets for all sorts of weather. Red O’Hearn will be showing how he manages to catch over 1000 raccoons a year. Rusty Johnson is not only among the top coyote trappers in the country but he and Mark June are teaming up to teach future top coyote trappers – so when Rusty talks coyotes, people listen. Lesel Reuwsaat has agreed to set aside his coyote demo to show us how to rack up large numbers of bobcats. John Chagnon who has trapped both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan will show us how to catch beaver. Casey Shope, a local trapper and inventor, will be showing us how he makes very impressive catches of mink and muskrats during his less than two weeks of vacation. And there is a very special treat this year! A woman’s view on trapping fox! Linda White (the president of Trapping Girl, Inc.) will show us how she puts up very respectable numbers of fox using her light weight tools, brightly colored pink traps, and other techniques to help her become a more proficient trapper. Along with the trapping tips all presenters will stress, safe, legal, humane, and ethical means of capture. And all are willing to engage the audience by encouraging questions and dialog. Veterans and beginners always gain valuable knowledge from the presentations.

This event offers something of interest to all members of the family. Inside vendors and tailgaters will be offering trapping equipment and supplies, crafts, outdoor equipment, and the list goes on. Raffles will be taking place. Free (supervised) fishing, archery, and pellet guns will be going on for the youngsters. Fine food from many local vendors will be available for purchase. Camping is available on the grounds.

Last year was the first Friday Night Fish Fry/Fundraiser and the crowd loved it – so its back! Top caterer, locally caught pan fish, door prizes, raffles and more.
