Nature issues stay-at-home order

14-20 inches of snow expected in late-season storm

HOUGHTON — After weeks of light snowfall, the Keweenaw is getting hit with what is hopefully one last snowstorm for the season.

Places along the water could get as few as 14 inches of snow by Tuesday morning, said Ryan Connelly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Negaunee. In higher-elevation spots such as Painesdale, it could be as high as 20 inches.

Already picking up Sunday afternoon, heavy snow was expected Sunday night, Connelly said. Starting Monday morning, the snow is expected to become lighter.

A resurgence may come Monday night with a band of lake-effect snow.

“We’re not sure where that’s going to set up, but it seems like it’ll bisect the Keweenaw someplace between Houghton and Copper Harbor,” Connelly said.

The storm is caused by a “really anomalously strong” jetstream in the upper levels of the atmosphere, Connelly said. The same phenomenon is causing severe tornadoes in the South.

Tuesday or Wednesday may get a couple-tenths of an inch of snow, Connelly said.

The next week or so will be colder than usual in April, but the NWS doesn’t see any more major storms so far, Connelly said.
