‘Round U.P.’ donations to food bank at Keweenaw Co-op tops $13K

HANCOCK — The nationwide shutdowns meant to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus continues to impact communities and food banks throughout our nation. In response, Your Keweenaw Co-op Market & Deli acted quickly on April 1st to name “the Western U.P. Food Bank” as our Round U.P. recipient. We are proud to announce that as of November 24th — and because of donations made at our registers of rounding up to the next whole dollar — we’ve collected more than $13,000 over the past nearly 8 months. We’re using that money to purchase quality food at wholesale for delivery to our Food Bank. To date, we’ve delivered nearly 550 cases of food to the Western U.P. Food Bank.

The mission of the Western U.P. Food Bank is to gather and distribute food to relieve hunger and increase food security in the U.P. Our Food Bank currently assists 50+ organizations in 6 counties. They provide food for 20+ organizations in Houghton County alone — including Copper Country Senior Meals, Little Brothers: Friends of the Elderly, 31 Backpacks, St. Vincent’s De Paul, many local mental health/help facilities and churches. We believe that OUR Food Bank is a necessary asset for many residents of our community — especially during these challenging times.

Your Keweenaw Co-op will continue our efforts in Rounding U.P. for the Western U.P. Food Bank. Our Round U.P. Program shows that “with small change, we can make a Big Difference in our very own community.” Going forward — we’ve broadened our scope of giving to include other local food pantries in our area that are in need. THANK YOU COPPER COUNTRY for your caring and your generosity.
