Dancing for a cause

A group of Houghton High School seniors raised more than $1,100 by hosting a semi-formal dance at Dee Stadium earlier this month.

The fundraiser benefited Houghton-Keweenaw Communities that Care.

The mother of senior Stella Wickstrom had organized homecoming dances for Houghton and had suggested a fundraiser last year. Students took up the mantle of organizing the dance and deciding on a cause.

In explaining the importance of mental health programs, senior Emilee DeForge pointed to a Frederick Douglass quote: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

The $1,110 in proceeds will go toward CTC activities that focus on mental health and suicide prevention.

The dance was successful, even drawing many students who don’t usually go to school-sponsored dances, students said.

“I’m impressed,” CTC’s Emily Frusti said. “It’s nice to see that we’re coming together with our youth to get ahead of the mental health crisis and to bring awareness.”

Although the student organizers are graduating, CTC is reaching out to other students to hopefully turn the semi-formal into an annual event.
