Kids fishing derby July 19 in Calumet

CALUMET – The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club is hosting the 10th Free Kids Fishing Derby July 19 at Swedetown Pond in Calumet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Keweenaw youngsters, visitors and vacationers are invited to enjoy a day of fishing, food and fun. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A few rods and reels are available but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. Free bait will be provided.

Kids may catch rainbow trout planted by the club and Calumet Township. Club members, fishermen and volunteers will provide help in baiting hooks, checking rods and reels, casting, fish identification and fish measuring. Prizes will be awarded to the largest fish caught by the girls and boys. There are also random drawings so that all participants have a chance to win a prize. In addition to the free lunch and beverages each kid will receive a “goodie bag” to take home.

If you would like to help out at the derby or make a donation (rods and reels or raffle prizes), call Mike Dudenas at 281-1557.
