John G. Caserio

CALUMET – John G. Caserio, 96, of Calumet and Pheonix, Arizona, passed away on January 1, 2016.

John was born in Laurium on June 17, 1919 to Joseph and Mary (Michela) Caserio. He graduated from Calumet High School and Cleary college in Ypsalanti, Michigan with a degree in accounting.

He served in World War II and on February 20, 1943, he married Dorothy Prideaux.

He operated the Calumet-Laurium Advertising Co., owned and operated Murphy Monument Co., Benjamin Weider Co. of Hancock, Public Oih of Calumet, and was an original investor in Copper Country Homes.

He served on the board of lot. National Bank of Calumet, Great Lakes Mutual, was the owner of Calumet Machine Shop and served on the board of Calumet golf course. He was also on the board of the Lakeview Cemetery for 45 years, retiring in 2014 at the age of 95.

John was preceded in death by his brother, Martin Caserio, in 2009. After 63 years of marriage, his loving wife Dorothy passed away on December 24, 2005.

He was fortunate to have spent the last 10 years of his life with his dear friend and companion, Bernice “Bernie” Szymanski.

John is survived by his son, Keith (Kaye) Caserio of Layton, Utah; and a daughter, Mary Caserio of Hancock. He was also a proud grandfather of Erin (Rob) Oltmanns of Utah and grandchildren Bryce and Joe; grandson, Jesse (Wendy) Chynoweth of Hancock; great-grandhcildren, Carsen, Kalli, Emery, Gage and Briggs; grandson, Jay (Christy) Caserio of Mesa, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Madison, Meisha, Crew and Tripp; granddaughter, Bree (Lars) Kilpela; great-grandchildren, Kaydence, Diem, Deacon and Boden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We all loved him so much, learned so much from him, and we are so blessed to have had him in our lives for as long as we did.

As requested by the deceased, cremation has taken place in Arizona and private gravesite service is to take place at Calumet Lakeview Cemetery at a future date.
